I feel like flying

I am going to be on the move again in the coming weeks. After a short trip to Amsterdam next week I plan a presence at Linuxtag 2006 in Wiesbaden. A week later I will be in lovely Dresden to attend the CCC event Datenspuren (13.05.06 to 14.05.06).

Two weeks later, I will attend the Podcastday in Cologne (24.05.06), spend a day at the Information Security Summit 2006 in Prague (25.05.06) for a talk and from there i head back to Berlin to attend ph-neutral (26.05.06 to 28.05.06).

Beginning of June, I head off to reboot in Copenhagen and on June 11th I will visit Zagreb, Croatia for the first time meeting the people at the Multimedia Institute. Later that month, Froscon is on my list.

If you will be at any of these events, feel free to let me know (tim at ccc dot de).

Wafa Sultan speaks up

Wafa Sultan is a secular psychologist of Syrian-American origin. Go read more about her on Wikipedia to get the background. Although she is quite well-known for her part in the the public discussion on the clash of civilizations her recent appearance on Al Jazeera has spread on the Internet like wildfire.

Have a look for yourself: Wafa Sultan on Al Jazeera (MPEG-4 H.264, 5:28 min, 30.4 MB)

The recording was provided by Memri TV (The Middle Easte Media Research Institute TV Monitor Project). Too bad the recordings are only available in WMV, but Memri TV provides an interesting view on the Arab world. There is a special section on Al Qaeda as well.

Goodbye AIM

It seems as if AIM refuses to take my old password AND to send me a new one on request. I have no clue what is going on here but for those who used to contact me via AIM, please move over to Jabber as it is the future anyway and is far more flexible, reliable and future-compatible anyway.

Do spaces belong into tags?

Many systems use tags these days but I think they differ in a single but important way: is the tag name allowed to include a space and if not, how are multiple words combined? One way would be to use underline characters or no characters at all. I do dislike both of these methods as underlines are ugly and it might be a difference if two words are used separately or combined. So considering the space as a part of the tag would be the way to go I guess.

However, if I enter tags to a URL posted to del.icio.us I have to separate tags using spaces. On the web however, separating keywords with a comma is much more common.

Internet and computing in Israel

Internet in Israel sucks. The hotel I am in charges $20 for a day (!) AND they block Skype, SIP and other internet telephony applications, they prevent TLS from being used when send e-mail via SMTP and the systems nag-page (that doesn’t really show up on my Safari because it was „designed for Internet Explorer“) pops in every ten clicks permanently redirecting my HTTP request and potentially endangering my RSS infrastructure. The only place that came close to such kind of service was Dubai but I think it is even worse here.

Main problem in Israel seems to be that Microsoft doesn’t care about localizing Microsoft Office in Hebrew on the Mac taking away incentive for people to buy Macs. Macs are really rare round here and those who chose that platform anyway have a hard time. Even worse, I haven’t seen a single Linux system running on any computer where I have been.

Kinnernet 2006 Podcast

Yeah I know. I am so fucking predictable. I am going to do a podcast series about Kinnernet 2006. I arrived yesterday and so far everything is cool and relaxed. I spent some time setting up my stuff and Gunjin was so nice to set up a new podcast blog for this as I don’t want to post it in this blog.

So here it is: the Kinnernet 2006 Podcast

I am sure photos will eventually show up on Flickr in the kinnernet2006 tag cloud.

Going to Kinnernet in Israel

Next week I am going to Kinnernet 2006 at Sea of Galilee in Israel. I have kindly been invited by Yossi Vardi and I am looking forward to have a good time there. I guess I am going to do a little presentation on CCC and Blinkenlights and spent my other time podcasting a bit from the event without forcing me in any particular schedule.

It’s my first time at Kinnernet and the photos of the 2005 event look promising. Lots of gear and crazy people. Yummy.

However, I am still looking for proper accommodation in Tel Aviv on March 29/30th and April 1st/2nd/3rd. If you have any hints or connections leave a comment or write me at tim at ccc dot de.
